ASTRO LOCATIONSExpedition of Dark Sky Slovenia to Lastovo Island, Croatia - May 2009report prepared by Andrej MoharJernej Širok and his girlfriend, Jurij Stare (our best photographer) and me have just returned from Lastovo Island. We spend on Lastovo 4 days, Saturday May 23 to Tuesday May 26, 2009. Limiting magnitude (SQM) was in all days from 21.65 (Milky way almost in zenith) up to 21.81. There were fortunately no fishing boats during our visit. Lastovo community is going to completely change lighting and I hope that we could achieve additional 0.1 magnitude according to SQM (which is not exact). So there are possibilities that Lastovo will have in near future the night sky nearly as dark as sky at top of La Palma Island. Seeing was always below 1”. During the night, air temperature was around +23C. Therefore, we observed in T-shirts in May! Sea temperature was +22C, excellent for swimming. Certainly a good side of global warming! It is better not to mention that in 55cm f/3.6 Dobsonian telescope with Nagler/Ethos eyepiece Veil nebula was like Orion nebula in 12 inch scope at very dark location! Veil was very bright against dark background. Incredible! It is amazing that I have been already 3 times at Lastovo and every day was clear! It seems that Lastovo has much better weather than nearby continent. Please find attached unprocessed photos. I am not happy with my new Sigma 20mm f/1.8 lens (which will be returned back to Sigma), but you will be able to do much better photos on September 14-18 at 2nd International Dark-Sky Camp on Lastovo (http://www.darkskyparks.org). You are kindly invited to attend that event.
